San Antonio & the Alamo

For the last few days, our support raising adventure has taken us to San Antonio. Although the drive was long, our time in the city went really well. We were able to share our hearts and vision for ministry with more people and ask them to join with us in all that God has in store for the U of Idaho.

While we where there, we took a side trip to visit the Alamo and downtown San Antonio. Being from the North, I always envisioned the Alamo to be this grand military fort out in the middle of the desert where the Texans valiantly fought. I pictured cactus and sagebrush in my mind along with numerous cannons and high fortified walls.

What I found was quite different. There was no desert. The "fort" is in the middle of downtown. Forget cactus and sagebrush. Instead, there's manicured grass and skyscrapers bordering it. Mighty fortified walls? Not so much. I'm impressed by the history surrounding it, but overall, I was quite disappointed with what I found...two thumbs down.
Now, the Riverwalk and the Market Square on the other hand were quite enjoyable. We strolled the pathway in the afternoon and enjoyed all the sights and smells of the restaurants along the river. In the Market Square, we became immersed in the Mexican culture. I've discovered I love the smell of fresh corn tortillas. We even were able to see a mariachi band! Of course, we had to get a picture with a sombrero...
We may be back in San Antonio later this summer. We're hoping and praying that God would open the door for us to share our hearts with more people and churches in the city. We look forward to seeing what he does!
